Morning walks bring joy

Pet Owner: Margaret Thompson, 77

Pet’s Name: Buster

What type of animal are they? Buster is a Golden Retriever mix, about 70 pounds of pure love and mischief!

How old is your pet? He’s 14 years old now, but he is still lively and full of fun.

How did you first meet or choose your pet? I found Buster at the local rescue center three years ago. He’d been returned twice because he was “too energetic.” The moment I saw him bouncing around that kennel, I knew he was perfect for me. At 64, I thought, why not match his energy?

What made you decide to get your pet? After my husband passed, the house felt so quiet. My daughter suggested a pet for companionship, and she was absolutely right. I needed something to care for again, and Buster needed someone who had time for long walks and adventures.

Describe your pet’s personality in three words. Loyal, mischievous, gentle.

What’s the best part of your day with your pet? Our morning walks around the neighbourhood. Buster knows everyone’s routine better than I do! He’s got friends at every house, and watching him greet his “people” just fills my heart with joy.

What’s the most memorable adventure you’ve had with your pet? Last summer, we went camping for the first time together. Buster had never seen a lake before, and watching him discover he could swim was magical. He spent hours fetching sticks from the water, completely soaked and absolutely thrilled.

Has your pet ever got into trouble? Oh my! Last Christmas, Buster somehow got into the kitchen and ate an entire batch of mince pies I’d made for the church fair. The vet assured me he’d be fine, but I had to explain to the vicar why I arrived empty-handed. Buster just wagged his tail through the whole ordeal!

How has your pet enriched your life? Buster has given me purpose and routine again. He’s forced me to stay active, meet new people in the neighborhood, and he’s the best listener when I need to talk through my thoughts. He’s also taught me that it’s never too late for new adventures.

What’s one thing your pet does that always makes you smile? Every single day when I come home from errands, Buster acts like I’ve been gone for months. He does this full-body wiggle dance that starts at his tail and works its way to his nose. Pure joy, every time.

What advice would you give to other pet owners? Don’t let age stop you from getting a pet if you want one. Yes, they’re work, but they give back so much more. Also, rescue pets often come with the most grateful hearts.

Anything else to add? Buster has shown me that this chapter of my life can be just as adventurous and fulfilling as any other. We’re planning a trip to Scotland next spring – his first time seeing sheep!
