No puzzle why I love Whiskers

Pet Owner: Robert King, 58

Pet’s Name: Whiskers

What type of animal are they? Whiskers is a tabby cat, with a lovable nature, who knows her mind.

How old is your pet? She’s 12 now, a proper senior lady who’s earned her right to be particular about everything.

How did you first meet or choose your pet? Whiskers chose me, really. She was a stray who started appearing in my garden five years ago. After weeks of her staring at me through the kitchen window during breakfast, I finally gave in and let her stay.

What made you decide to get your pet? I’d never been a cat person, but after early retirement, I was spending a lot of time at home alone. Whiskers made it clear she wasn’t going anywhere, so I figured I might as well make it official.

Describe your pet’s personality in three words. Independent, affectionate, demanding.

What’s the best part of your day with your pet? Evening time when she settles on my lap while I read. She purrs so contentedly, and there’s something deeply peaceful about that shared quiet time.

What’s the most memorable adventure you’ve had with your pet? Taking her to the vet for the first time was quite the adventure! She’d never been in a carrier, and she voiced her displeasure the entire way. The vet said she was remarkably healthy for a former stray, which made all that drama worth it.

Has your pet ever got into trouble? Tell us about it! Whiskers has a passion for knocking things off my desk, especially when I’m trying to work on puzzles. She once scattered a 1000-piece jigsaw I’d been working on for weeks. I found her sitting in the middle of the pieces, looking quite pleased with herself.

How has your pet enriched your life? She’s taught me patience and given me a sense of being needed again. There’s something wonderful about having another living being depend on you, even if she pretends she doesn’t most of the time.

What’s one thing your pet does that always makes you smile? She has this habit of “helping” me make the bed by attacking the sheets as I try to smooth them. Every morning, it’s the same playful battle, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What advice would you give to other pet owners? Let them teach you their rhythm. Cats especially have their own way of showing affection, and once you learn their language, the relationship becomes so much richer.

Anything else to add? I never thought I’d become one of those people who talks to their cat, but here we are! Whiskers is an excellent conversationalist, even if she only contributes the occasional meow.
