Charlie is chatty, clever and cheeky

Pet Owner: Dorothy Williams, 72

Pet’s Name: Charlie

What type of animal are they? Charlie is a budgerigar – a beautiful blue and white parakeet with quite the vocabulary!

How old is your pet? He’s six years old and still learning new words and phrases.

How did you first meet or choose your pet? My granddaughter was moving abroad and couldn’t take Charlie with her. She asked if I’d look after him temporarily, but that was four years ago, and we’ve become inseparable!

What made you decide to get your pet? It wasn’t really my decision initially, but I quickly discovered how wonderful bird companionship can be. Charlie brings such life and chatter to my days.

Describe your pet’s personality in three words. Chatty, intelligent, cheeky.

What’s the best part of your day with your pet? Morning coffee time when Charlie perches on my shoulder and we “discuss” the day ahead. He’s learned to say “Good morning, beautiful!” which never fails to start my day with a smile.

What’s the most memorable adventure you’ve had with your pet? Taking Charlie to visit my sister for the first time was quite an event. He spent the entire car journey providing commentary on everything we passed, and by the time we arrived, he’d learned to mimic my sister’s laugh perfectly from our phone calls.

Has your pet ever got into trouble? Tell us about it! Charlie once learned to imitate the telephone ringing so perfectly that I spent a whole afternoon running to answer calls that weren’t there. He found this hilarious and kept doing it whenever I sat down to rest!

How has your pet enriched your life? Charlie has brought conversation and laughter back into my home. Even when I’m alone, I never feel lonely because he’s always chattering away. He’s also connected me with other bird enthusiasts at the local pet shop.

What’s one thing your pet does that always makes you smile? When Charlie sees me putting on my coat, he says “Bye bye, love you!” in the exact tone my granddaughter used to use. It’s like having a little piece of family with me always.

What advice would you give to other pet owners? Birds make wonderful companions for people our age – they’re social, don’t need walking, and can live for many years. Just be prepared for them to pick up everything you say!

Anything else to add? Charlie has taught me that it’s never too late to learn something new – about birds, about companionship, and about finding joy in the everyday chatter of life.
